How to make stamens with laminated tips. -Advanced method.

I have long tried to make super detailed stamens, and when there was finally time in my schedule for new experiments with paper flowers, this technique was at the top of my to-do list.

I think the results are really beautiful, and the finished crepe paper stamens are incredibly effective because they look so lifelike. The level of detail is high, and so is the difficulty, so stay focused as I guide you through each step. It's all worth it, and I look forward to sharing it all with you here.

You will need:

  • 90g crepe paper in the color of the stamens.
  • 90g crepe paper in the color of the laminated tips.
  • A good and sharp pair of paper scissors.
  • Glue
  • A paintbrush or small dough scraper.

Preparing the stamens.

For the stamens: cut a strip of crepe paper 5 x 7 cm, so that the vertical lines in the paper run parallel to the short side. Stretch the paper out:

Apply glue to one half of the paper, fold over and glue together. Let the strip dry a little before continuing:

For the tips: cut a narrow strip of crepe paper in the desired color and stretch it out completely so it is as long as the wide strip.
With a brush, spread an even layer of glue along one side of the narrow strip. The glue should be applied about a centimeter from the edge and all the way to the edge:

Glue the narrow strip down, about 2 mm in on the wide strip. Cut off the narrow strip, about 3 mm from the edge:

Apply glue again – right to the edge.
Carefully fold over to the other side of the wide strip:

Repeat this 3 times, making the next narrow strip slightly wider than the previous one, so it completely covers the first.
Press all layers together with your fingers without making them completely flat:

How to shape the laminated tips.

Once you have cut the stamens to your desired length, you should now shape each one while the paper is still damp:
You can either roll the tips together in small bunches so they stick together slightly. Carefully separate them. This will make them look a bit messy:
You can also gently roll each stamen all the way down. Roll the tip well until it no longer looks angular. This way, you get narrow stamens with a subtly marked tip:
Try pressing the tips flat with your nail or, for example, the end of a paintbrush. This also gives a beautiful result:
If you are making wide stamens, you can try trimming each laminated tip to a rounded shape before rolling the tip – this will give a beautifully defined tip:

Good to know:

  • Make these stamens little by little so the glue doesn't dry completely while you work.
  • When cutting and shaping the stamens, you can advantageously cut a small piece of 3-4 cm from the long strip and finish it before continuing. Making these stamens is intricate work, and it's most comfortable to work with small pieces of paper at a time.
  • In this post, I have used 90 g crepe paper, but if you want thicker tips, you can use 180 g instead, or even better; doublette crepe paper, which is very thick. See examples here:

If these instructions are too much of a mouthful, take a look at one of the previous posts on stamens, which are much easier to make.
